Peri
Days passed as bright as stars, and Peri had never wanted the brightness of them to dim.
Between them, Peri and Paul came up with many jobs Echo could help Paul with. Juliette pressed her lips together whenever she saw Echo, but Peri didn’t hear her say anything else about Echo leaving, and he tried so hard to listen for that. There were many outside jobs for Echo to help Paul with, and sometimes Peri would see Juliette walk by and hear her mention something inside that needed cleaning or tidying and Echo would nod and as soon as the outside job would finish he would hurry inside to clean or tidy whatever it was. And after working like this for a few hours in the morning, Echo would spend the next few hours learning to sign with Peri. It worked out perfectly, as most of the children’s classes Peri helped with were in the morning now—not that there were nearly as many classes as there used to be anymore.
“You could teach people. Take some of the classes, not just help out,” Echo said one day. “You’d be an amazing teacher. You are an amazing teacher.”
And Peri just stared at him, not really knowing what to say.
Sometimes Marie would sit with them when they signed, but mostly it was just him and Echo in a room with as few distractions as they could find, and they would sign and laugh and smile, and sometimes there were moments when they would just look at one another and Peri thought he would implode with longing.
Now it was Saturday, and they were in the kitchen looking through cookery books. When, days ago, Echo told Peri Juliette hadn’t meant what she’d said about him being banned from the kitchen, Peri had felt relieved but cautious about spending time in there. He’d tried to say sorry again to Juliette, but she’d waved him away. And he still hadn’t really hung out in the kitchen like he usually did. Today he felt less cautious and far more relaxed. He wasn’t at all sure what Echo was looking for, but he liked the leaning in close they were doing against the kitchen counter as they turned the pages of book after book.
Echo’s finger tips brushed his arm. How about this one? he signed when Peri met his gaze. He gestured to the book.
If Peri was being honest, he hadn’t actually been paying much attention to the recipes. Echo smelled too good, all warm and woodsmoky from the bonfire he’d built in the garden with Paul this morning, and daydreaming about what it would be like to just curl up in Echo’s arms, to be completely surrounded by that scent, was too hard to stop.
Biting his lip, Peri glanced down at the photograph of a light-coloured fruit cake. The words below the picture were jumbling themselves together, and it would take more concentration than he currently had to even try to decipher them, so he didn’t attempt it.
